Biography

Peter Szeibel was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1956.  Six months after his birth, the Hungarian Revolution against the Soviets broke out.  His parents fled with him and immigrated to the United States.  Peter grew up in New York City.  During his high school years at Bronx Science, he studied piano and organ at the pre-college division of The Juilliard School.  After high school, while pursuing his undergraduate studies at Columbia University, he studied organ privately with Jon Gillock, who is one of the world’s leading interpreters of the organ music of Olivier Messiaen.  After graduating from college, Peter enrolled in medical school at the State University of New York in Syracuse.  He obtained his M.D. in 1982 and returned to the New York City area for psychiatric residency training.  At that time he purchased his first harpsichord, a 2-manual Flemish, and began harpsichord studies with Chilean-American harpsichordist Lionel Party.  Dr. Szeibel’s organ and harpsichord recordings reflect his passion for a repertoire which spans over 400 years, including works by William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, Frescobaldi, Sweelinck, Froberger, Buxehude, J.S. Bach, Couperin, Scarlatti, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Franck, and the late 19th and 20th century French organ masters.  Dr. Szeibel also enjoys playing his collection of recorders and early flutes.  He continues to work as a part-time psychiatrist.  He lives in Dubuque, Iowa with his wife, Carmen Hernandez, a retired history professor.  All three of their grown children are musicians.
